Regenerative Medicine for Low Back Pain

The use of stem cells and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an exciting and recent development in the treatment of low back pain as a means for avoiding surgery and painful rehabilitation. Stem cells and PRP are produced within your body and are useful in the natural healing and restoration of painful injuries.

Dr. Gerald E. Dworkin, Medical Director, is a board-certified, rehabilitation and interventional pain management specialist, nationally known for the treatment of back, neck and extremity pain. For over thirty years he has been on the cutting edge of treatments for painful spine conditions and has performed thousands of successful procedures. He is uniquely qualified to integrate various treatment options to optimize patient outcomes.

How Is Our Regenerative Treatment for Low Back Pain Different?

We utilize multiple therapy options to tailor fit treatment for persistent spine pain. This often includes collecting and placing stem cell and PRP materials in pain generating locations in the lumbar spine to promote natural healing and reduce pain without the need for invasive surgery.

In addition, we often combine the above with a minimally invasive procedure called plasma disc decompression to reduce the pressure within the painful disc. This is coupled with the injection of stem cell and/or PRP regenerative substances – a process pioneered by Dr. Dworkin.

What Is Regenerative Medicine and How Does the Use of Stem Cell and PRP Improve Healing?

Regenerative medicine utilizes one’s own body healing agents to restore and repair injured tissues. Unlike steroid injections, these are naturally occurring healing agents produced in one’s own body.

These specialized cells and their fluid are collected through blood samples or bone marrow. The natural body healing agents are introduced by careful techniques performed by Dr. Dworkin, a board-certified physician, physiatrist and expert in interventional pain techniques.

Dr. Dworkin has developed the ability to integrate many established pain procedures with the new science of regenerative medicine. He understands the indications for each type of treatment option and is uniquely suited to work with you to improve your condition.

What are the Types of Regenerative Healing Agents?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is concentrated whole blood spun down. This separates red blood cells from the platelet rich part of the plasma, which contains growth factors and other elements that stimulate healing of injured tissues.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) are cells harvested primarily from one’s own bone marrow. These cells and their surrounding fluid enhance the repair of injured soft tissues, muscle, tendons, ligaments, and discs. These adult stem cells have an amazing capacity to promote healing.

What Sets Us Apart

Dr. Dworkin, Professor and Chairman of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is a board-certified pain specialist. He performs these spine procedures himself, using ultrasound or C-Arm fluoroscopy for precision guidance.

Many other providers have these injections performed by assistants or non-board certified specialists in pain, this is not recommended.

There are several techniques which may be performed to reduce pain. Dr. Dworkin has the experience to know which procedures are most effective for your painful condition. He will carefully and clearly explain the benefits, risks and expectations of each technique.
